Today’s internet LOL is proudly brought to you by abwavecanada.com
I was surfing public access yesterday when I stumbled upon the latest in ‘sit on your arse and do absolutely nothing technology©’.

Though you see, that awesome quip up there isn’t quite as clever as it seems – the whole sit-and-get-fit thing is the EXACT marketing line that this bunch of snake-oil salesmen are choosing to run with.

It’s fun and it’s easy. Just sit and get fit!*

As you can probably tell, The Ab Wave™ is top-shelf Awesome™

If you’re reading this far, you’ve probably gathered that the sarcasm seeping out of this very review is in direct relation to the dollars seeping out of average-joe’s pocket as he lines up to place a down-payment of $14.95 USD on this piece of garbage.

Cost of the Ab Wave™

$174.75 (1 x payment of $14.95 up front followed by 4 x $39.95 + your creditability + your soul).

Why I don’t ‘buy it’

If the fitness models on the infomercial are anything to go by, their ripped abs and core are once again, nothing to do with this machine.

The fact that that ‘line’ in quotes up there is followed by an ‘asterisk’ which clearly states:“*By adhering to the Ab Wave System which consists of adhering to a healthful meal plan, exercise on the Ab Wave machine, plus regular cardio or aerobic exercise. Your results may vary.” gives you an indication as to how low the marketers had to stoop to be able to pass this pile of dung off as a piece of exercise equipment.

That line is basically saying “If you train and eat properly, regardless of this machine, you’ll see results. But they may vary.”

Lucky they covered their arses with the ‘results may vary’ bit. For a minute there, I could have sworn that sitting on my backside whilst letting a machine do all the work for me would have given me the abs of ‘The Situation’.
The Ab Wave™ engineers should have built-in a cup-holder for jumbo coke and fries whilst they were at it.

But surely there’s a way one could DO EVEN LESS than have to ‘sit’ whilst exercising right? Can’t this machine literally lift me up from my pizza-induce-coma, dust off my bed sores and wipe my arse for me? Talk about dropping the f*cking ball!

So you’re saying there are no benefits of using the Ab Wave™?

There are benefits for sure – If you’re suffering from a heavy wallet or inflated bank account, this just might be the cure to your ills.
Also, if you’re completely mental, looking for a quick-fix or haven’t been reading the gimmick section of the Crude website for very long, you MAY be inclined to part way with 175 clams.

The Ab Wave™ Pros

Straight from the marketing drivel…

#1 The Ab Wave is a great ab workout that you can do in a comfortable, seated position that’s WAY MORE FUN than crunches and leg raises!
Way more fun — as in, way less effective AND you get to look like a complete doofus whilst using it.

#2 Ab Wave™ helps you fire your core like never before!
‘Fire your core’? Seriously, what does this even mean? My fist will help ‘fire your face’.

#3 From the Easy Slide & Glide movement to the Total Body Twist & Turn motion, your body will go from frumpy to fabulous!
Easy Slide and Glide sounds like a lubricant. Are you sure we’re talking about the same ‘sit on your arse and do nothing’ technology© here?

#4 The Ab Wave™ incorporates movements that will rock your entire body and work your core, obliques, back, arms and legs!
I know a similar ‘movement’ that this statement reminds me of…

The Ab Wave™ Cons

#1 May reduce the risk of wealth
#2 May increase the total volume of useless sh*t in your basement
#3 Will increase your Dexterity by +4 and your Mantra by +10! (only when coupled with a single hair plucked from the Evil Wizard’s pubic region).

Editor’s Note: What do you guys think of this device? Has anyone actually spent coin on the Ab Wave™? Comment below.

(All photography by Kane Vato Photography www.kanevato.com)

A lot of people have been asking me what I did in the 2 weeks prior to being ‘photo-shoot’ ready. I’m talking photo-shoot ready in around 8 weeks from a ‘reasonable’ level of body fat. Circa 10-15% for guys and 20-25% for girls.
The photos of how I look year round in ‘Maintenance’ mode are all over this site, so I don’t need to post another one here.

First a disclaimer

I’m by no means an expert in this area. Results can and WILL vary — what works for me, may not be ideal for you.
Also, the shots are ALL without flash and used the natural light of the area we took the shots in.

The lead-up

In the weeks prior to my “2-week” out period, i had been slowly, but surely ramping up my training and fine-tuning my diet.

This began at about the 8 week mark and was done for two reasons:
1. I didn’t want to suddenly shock the system with a bunch of new training regimens that it wasn’t used to (this would have had a high chance in leading me to either burnout or unpredictable results).
2. Getting the diet spot-on BEFORE the “2-week out” period allowed me greater freedom on the weekends. I could STILL have pizza and wine, as long as my weekly dietary patterns were set in place.

In terms of my diet…
I was fasting daily for 16 hours, with an 8 hour feeding window (ala lean gains). Nothing else really changed here.
In terms of my training – I had been following both 5×5 and RPT regimens for quite a while (probably 6 months). This included big lifts with long rests, keeping it all very, very simple.

Diet 3 weeks out

At about the 3 week out mark, I started eating a lot more ‘whole’ foods. If I was after a snack, instead of reaching for a protein shake, I’d snack on something which involved chewing.
Oats and protein powder mixed in was another staple I had quite a lot. My carb sources became yams and vegetables with very few grains originating from ‘bread’.

Training 3 weeks out

I changed up my schedule to a much higher volume of training using a similar technique to Phase 1 from Rusty’s Visual Impact. This would ultimately bridge the gap between the heavier, strength-training sessions and the glycogen depleting workouts I was going to be completing at 1 week out. Think short rests of 45 seconds and high volume.

Diet 2 weeks out

Still fasting daily at this point. Had a huge binge on steak, prawns, red wine and pavlova at the weekend. My last ‘real’ feast.
Now it was time to ‘dial-up’ my adherence to ‘good’ foods and stop with the ‘sometimes’ foods. (It was only for 2weeks, so no real issues here. I don’t recommend doing this for a long time. It’s unrealistic, unsustainable and fricken boring as hell).

Training 2 weeks out

I made a few errors here, in that I was still researching the best ‘plan of attack’ for my final 2 weeks and suddenly I found myself already at week 3.
So rather than changing it up significantly, I kept the training simple, but heavy using short rest periods to encourage additional fat-burn.
This is when I started increasing my cardio to walking pretty much every day for 45 mins, with a sprint in there at least once.

1 week out

This final week involved serious adherence to diet. Whole foods, salt reduction, water intake increases. Controversially, I also ditched any form of fasting, and went back to a 3-4 meal a day schedule. I did this mainly due to the fact that I was coupling high volume glycogen depleting workouts with low body fat — high potential to lose some mass here.
I also had a chest/arm wax, a spray tan and drank a heap of dandelion tea to shed any last bit of water from beneath the skin.

The results…

All shots were taken with natural light in the surrounding area.

An old photo from 2001…

Just to give some perspective on where I’ve come from in the past 10 years, I thought I’d post this (embarrassing) picture for you to laugh at.

BLAST FROM THE PAST: Such a long time ago now, but it goes to show that a 'lifestyle' change makes a big difference long term. Please excuse the fashion sense and blonde tips. A huge WTF moment I know!

Want more detail?

As I’m currently detailing the sh*t out of my diet and training for my impending book release, I won’t be giving away all of my info just yet!
The final ‘STAGE’ of my diet and training is a key factor in the success that I had — so I don’t want to spoil the ending :)

Stay tuned for the book release

Today’s guest-post is by Keith Lai of Fit Mole

Today he gives you 5 ‘tough-love’ reasons as to why you may not be seeing you six-pack abs any time soon
———-

Look, we all get it! You want six pack abs…

The multi-billion dollar fitness industry hears you loud and clear.
It’s the epitome of an attractive and healthy body.
But just because you want it, doesn’t mean it’ll happen. I mean, there’s a reason that 99.9% of the world population doesn’t have ripped abs and that’s because it’s f*cking hard.
If everyone was lean and ripped, then you wouldn’t even be reading this site in the first place.

So here are 5 reasons you won’t be seeing your six-pack abs any time soon…

#1 – You think it’s too hard

Aww, boo hoo.
Until you realize that achieving anything worthwhile in life is nothing but plain old hard work, then you won’t achieve success.
If you want to become rich, then you need to work your ass off and if you want six pack abs then you need to consistently diet and exercise.
It’s really that plain and simple, but until you realize how hard it is, only then will it become easy.

#2 – You think you don’t have time

Really? You don’t have time?
Are you telling me that you don’t have time to exercise for 1 hour, but you have time to log into Facebook and Twitter every single day to read pointless status updates?
As for people who say that they don’t have time to eat healthy, let me say this – getting a six pack is all about creating a calorie deficit over time, and the only way to create a calorie deficit is to eat less, and the last time I checked, eating less food doesn’t take more time.
People who say they don’t have time are really people who just don’t want to make time. Getting a six pack is obviously not a number-one priority for them, so until you make getting a six pack your priority above everything else, only then will you be able to succeed.

#3 – You think you need access to a gym and tonnes of supplements

You definitely don’t need a gym membership to get six pack abs. In fact, you can get a killer workout done with just your bodyweight.
And for people who say that they need to buy expensive supplements in order to get a six pack – that’s bullsh*t. These days, supplements are more about who has the hottest girl on the bottle than it is about the actual supplement.
You don’t need supplements to get a six pack. They can help in certain situations, but getting a six pack is more about eating less food and creating a consistent calorie deficit and guess what, eating less is cheap (mind blowing, I know).

#4 – You blame your genetics

Hey buddy, my genetics suck too. Neither of my parents have the “shoot electricity out of your hand” gene and you don’t hear me bitching about it.
But seriously, genetics have nothing to do with your ability to get six pack abs. Honestly, there are some very rare diseases that prevent people from losing weight, but those are one in a million.
As long as you’re consistently working out and dieting, then there’s no reason why you can’t get a six pack. If you’re on the heavier side, then it’s obviously going to take you longer to get a six pack, but as long as you have perseverance, then there’s absolutely no reason why you can’t get a six pack no matter how “bad” your genetics are.

#5 – You say you don’t WANT a six pack

“Nah, I don’t really want a six pack”
And this my friends… this is the culmination of all 4 previous excuses put together. When someone says that they don’t want a six pack, they are probably lying to you.
I don’t care what you say, every single breathing person on this planet has at one point in their lives wanted to have six pack abs. But because of the aforementioned reasons, that person has come to realize how damn difficult getting a six pack really is. When that person realizes that they’ll never get a six pack, they protect their dignity by telling themselves and everyone else that they simply don’t want a six pack.
Sad, but true.

What are your favorite excuses?

——
Keith Lai is the author of the fitness blog FitMole where he talks about his own no BS approach towards fitness.

Today I aim to find out what makes JC Deen the man he is, and why he’s giving away his “A No-BS Approach to Looking Great Naked” book for FREE…
————-

Clint: Thanks JC for taking the time to answer some ‘Crude’ questions. First of all, I love you work – your blog is honest, to the point and easy to understand for anyone out there from beginners to advanced trainers. How did you make a start in the fitness industry and why did you choose to be different?

JC Deen: I got started on accident, kind of. Back in 2007(ish), I began posting on Lyle McDonalds forums. I was there to learn about nutrition mostly, and I got so engulfed in all the information that I ended up spending 3-4 hours per day on the forums doing nothing but reading pages and pages of threads.

There was so much information about training and nutrition that, well, actually made sense. Nearly everything was backed by science or was at least, rationally thought out and discussed in a manner that was in favor of evidenced-based methods. I found myself constantly answering questions and giving feedback. I eventually started my fitness site in 2008 and made a vow to be different from other trainers in the fitness community.

I always keep my audience in mind and want them to have the best information which allows them to make the most of their fitness efforts.

JC Deen training…

Clint: What is the number one thing that has kept you motivated?

JC Deen: People – without my readers and clients, I have nothing. Everyday I wake up loving what I do, and that’s enough for me.

Clint: When I read jcdfitness.com, I get the idea that you’re a no-bullsh*t kind of person who trains and eats how he likes regardless of ‘trends’. How accurate is this picture?

JC Deen: Extremely accurate. I hate the idea of pigeonholing myself into a certain diet fad or training style. Fact is, my rules are pretty simple. Train in a manner that suits your lifestyle and make sure it’s something you enjoy. Consume enough whole foods to cover your nutritional bases and fill in the rest with your favorite foods – I prefer to eat Espresso-flavored Haagen Dazs every evening before bed.

Clint: Your FREE guide ‘A No-BS Approach to Looking Great Naked’ is out which is a stellar read in it’s own right I might add – what made you want to give this bad-boy away for nothing?

JC Deen: Thanks for the compliment. I wrote it with the intent of helping others get a feel for what goes on in my head when it comes to training and nutrition. It took me a long time to get to the point of being comfortable, yet confident with my personal approach to the fitness lifestyle.

I finally felt it was time to bottle it all up and give it away. I’ve found that for many who are new to the site, it’s a great introduction to the content and who I am as a trainer.

JC Deen and Alan Aragon

Clint: What is your current training routine like, and what does it involve?

JC Deen: I was doing some bodybuilding training in which I’d train 2-3 major muscle groups per day, hitting my entire body over 3 days. I’d rest on the 4th day and then repeat the process. As of late, I’ve not had the time to go to the gym so frequenty, so now I’m basically going every other day and doing mostly full body stuff.

I will start with squats, usually working up to a 3 rep max, or I’ll do 5 sets of 3-5. Then I train my upper body with more of a bodybuilder-style set and rep scheme (I do like the pump work).

Clint: What are some of the other writers, artists and fitness leaders that have inspired you?

JC Deen: There are so many…

Alan Aragon is the one guy who’s influenced me the most. He’s intelligent, has a sense of humor, and is a straight-shooter when it comes to nutrition. He always tells it like it is and I can appreciate that.

John Romaniello is a friend of mine, and I’m forever thankful for his writing on training, and fat loss – especially when it comes to complexes.

Roger Lawson is anther good friend of mine, and fellow podcast host iTunes. He’s actually been my trainer a few points in my life and am incredibly indebted to him for all I’ve learned from him.

Matt Perryman is by far, one of the best fitness/nutrition writers I know of today. I tell everyone I know about him because he talks about topics and ideas most are afraid to get into, but he does it in such a manner that is easy to understand and relate to.

Nicholas Horton inspired me to actually take up Zen meditation and practice it to a point that it carries over into the rest of my life – even into my training. I owe my obsession with daily squatting to him, too.

Lyle McDonald – get all his books if you want to understand nutrition inside and out.

Girls Gone Strong – I’m a huge fan of everything these girls are doing. I love the message they’re continually putting forth for women to be strong and fit.

Bret Contreras- I had the chance to meet him a few years ago at a fitness conference and have been hooked on his material ever since. He’s on one of the best training minds I know.

Clint: I debunk a lot of gimmicks and scams on this site. Is there anything fitness related that you’ve fallen victim to yourself and wasted your money on in the past?

JC Deen: The only thing I can think of are stupid supplements promising major amounts of muscle growth or rapid fat loss. I bought a lot of those when I was like 17-18 years old.

“It’s only after we’ve lost everything that we’re free to do anything” – Tyler Durden

Clint: Your own physical feature that you are most proud of

JC Deen: My glutes. Have you seen them?

Clint: Uhm, I haven’t. No! – Are there any KEY diet or training tips that you adhere to?

JC Deen: I always focus on big compound movements, make up the majority of my carb intake with fresh fruits, and eat enough animal to cover my protein needs.

Clint: What’s a day-in-the-life for JCDeen? Give us a run-down of how you eat, train and move on a regular day.

JC Deen:
#1 – Wake up between 7-10 am – breakfast is usually 2-3 eggs fried in butter with 16-20 oz of orange juice and 8-16oz whole milk, and about 50g protein in a shake.
#2 – Drink a pot of coffee over 2-3 hours.
#3 – Answer client emails, check their logs and records.
#4 – Have lunch – usually another 2-3 eggs, some type of animal cooked in butter, and some more orange juice, milk, and some fruit.
#5 – Work on fitness articles, record podcasts, do whatever work I need to on the site.
#6 – Train around 2-3 pm.
#7 – Have a post workout meal of a protein shake, more fruit and 4-5 potatoes.
#8 – Head to the fitness studio right after to train clients.
#9 – Return home for dinner, which consists of more animal, more potatoes, and orange juice.
#10 – Lights out about 12-2 am.

Clint: What supplements do you use if any? If not, why not?

JC Deen: I take Vitamin D, E, A, and Zinc, mainly because I am deficient in these as my blood work proves. I also take Armour thyroid, as well as liothyronine(T3) because I am hypothyroid.

Clint: Favourite quote?

JC Deen: “It’s only after we’ve lost everything that we’re free to do anything” – Tyler Durden. I say this because when I was at the lowest point in my life, I found hope. That hope was in realizing I had to take control of my situation, after I seemingly lost everything (metaphorically, of course). If you’re interested in reading more about why this is my favorite quote, please read my personal story.

Clint: What’s next on the horizon for JC Deen?

JC Deen: Right now I’m working on my first training and nutrition program for sale and hope to have it ready by May.

Something landed on the front page of smh.com.au today which raised one, two or even three of my eyebrows

I’ll admit, it was between laughing at a Chris Brown video and reading a deranged tale about some bloke who made his own piss dungeon.
True Story.

Gluten free food is such a hot-topic right now

It’s easy to see the correlation between the sudden influx of super market items which are deemed wheat free, gluten free, everything free, and what’s being publicized in the media.
Does this make it a supermarket ploy though?
Are we being led down the path of purchasing gluten-free products which cost double to triple the price of regular goods in a vain attempt of ridding ourselves of something we all seem to know little about?

What makes me think the majority know very little about gluten sensitivity

I read commentary on various articles which go something like the following:

There is no need to avoid gluten unless you have a medically diagnosed intolerance such as Coeliac disease. I was misdiagnosed with Coeliac for a year and trying to avoid gluten not only made eating less enjoyable (sorry Coeliacs) but also much more expensive. Don’t fall for this being cleverly marketed as a fad diet, gluten is by no means a poison to everybody!

Until further investigation, it is easy for most people to misinterpret what they’ve read on the internet. Why’s that? You say…

Because Gluten sensitivity (intolerance) and Coeliacs Disease are two different things

Just because you went to the doctor and the tests came back as ‘negative’ for Coeliacs Disease, this does NOT void you from being sensitive to Gluten.
On the contrary.

Of course they do correlate, but often gluten sensitivity and Coeliacs Disease can be separate little SOB’s.
I know many people that have an intolerance to Gluten (one of the 17% of the western population) as opposed to having Coeliac Disease (1% of the western population). My wife, it would seem, is one of the 17%.

A lot of us suffer from varying degrees of Gluten Sensitivity

Despite the fact that a lot of us are unknowingly gluten intolerant to some degree, there’s a HUGE (growing) list of symptoms:

• Abdominal Distention
• Abdominal Pain and Cramping
• Alternating Bouts of Diarrhea and Constipation
• Anemia
• Arthritis
• Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD)
• Autism
• Bloating (see Gluten Intolerance Bloating)
• Bone Density Loss
• Borborygmi (stomach rumbling)
• Constipation (see Celiac Disease Constipation)
• Stunted Growth and Failure to Thrive
• Depression, Anxiety and Irritability (see Celiac Depression)
• Dermatitis Herpetiformis (skin rash)
• Diabetes
• Diarrhea
• Fatigue…

And this is just the tip of the iceberg – The list goes on!
Click here for the full list of symptoms

With so many gluten associated symptoms, it’d be easy to put two and two together wouldn’t it

“Oh yeah, I have 2 or more from that list, I must be gluten intolerant and have a mild case of Coeliacs Disease”.

But that isn’t the point of this article…

The point is whether we are all being exploited by the supermarket giants or not.
The fact that a packet of Gluten-free sandwich wraps are $6.80 and a packet of regular ones are half the price would lead me to think that perhaps we are being exploited.
Then I figure supply-and-demand is playing its part in the equation.
If a tenth of the food items on offer are gluten free, it would make sense that those in the minority would have to be slightly more expensive to produce.

Where we need to be careful of gluten-free products

There’s a tendency, with every new fad or product that hits the shelves toting that it’s ‘this FREE’ and ‘that FREE’, to think we can all change our eating habits.
Just because it’s gluten-free, doesn’t mean it’s any better for you.
Gluten free products are still filled with calories and need to be regulated just like everything else you consume.

A huge positive of gluten-free eating and limiting your grains

The importance of fiber is well documented, so I’m not telling you to stop eating your grains all together.
Heck, I wouldn’t give up eating a Pana De Casa with my wife’s Mussel dish any time soon!
All I’m saying is, reduce the amount of breads and wheat-filled products that you have on a daily basis.
Bloating, skin irritations or any number of those nasty ‘symptoms’ on the list may subside and you might just feel better for it.

Further reading on Gluten Sensitivity and Coeliacs Disease

Sarah Wilson wrote a great piece on everything involving Gluten and how it can lead to Coeliacs Disease in the long term.
I suggest you check it out >

I’m a huge fan of Rusty Moore’s programs and whatever he produces. This is for two simple reasons:
- Rusty knows his sh*t by doing some SERIOUS research.
- His programs simply WORK (Checkout my own results here)

First, what’s contained in the 99 page Visual Impact Cardio book

Introduction: Losing Body Fat as a “Skill”
Chapter 1: Calories Burned After Exercise Don’t Amount to Much
Chapter 2: Focus on Calories Burned During the Workout
Chapter 3: Calories Burned: Intervals Vs Steady State
Chapter 4: A 1 Page Interval Training Summary
Chapter 5: How Interval Training Actually Works
Chapter 6: Calorie Deficit, Calories Burned, & Fat Loss
Chapter 7: Burning Stubborn Body Fat
Chapter 8: Calories, Food, and Workout Timing
Chapter 9: Improving Popular Fat Loss Programs
Chapter 10: Separating Fat Loss & Resistance Training
Chapter 11: Visual Impact Cardio Preparation
Chapter 12: The Beginner’s Cycle
Chapter 13: The Intermediate Cycle
Chapter 14: The Advanced Cycle
Chapter 15: The Maintenance Plan
Chapter 16: Final Thoughts

I Want You to Master the Skill of Losing Body Fat…Including Those Last 10-20 Pounds.

A quick overview of Visual Impact Cardio

I know Rusty pretty well, and the fact that he invests all of his time into each product, really shows in this book. Upon first impression, I was overwhelmed by the amount of up-to-date information outlined, but as is Rusty’s style, he manages to break it all down into easily digestible chunks without ‘turning off’ potential beginners and intermediates. THAT’S a difficult challenge just by itself!

So does Visual Impact Cardio actually work?

I am yet to test it personally, but with my previous experiences with Rusty’s Visual Impact products are anything to go by, I’d say they definitely will.
Check my experiences with Visual Impact Muscle Building here >

Who would benefit ‘MOST’ from the program?

- Persistent gym members who push with ever increasing intensity, yet can’t seem to shake those last 10-20 pounds of body fat.
- Trainers and gym members who bust their butt with intensity, but look the same year after year - (seemingly permanently 10-20 pounds away from reaching their goal).

If Intense Training Was the Main Key to Losing Body Fat…There Would be a Lot More Lean People Walking the Planet.

Are there any down-sides?

- The book is very in-depth (you might need to re-read it a month after reading it the first time)
- You will need access to cardio machines to get the most out of this course.**
- You’ll need a training journal (diary) as you’ll be dealing with “precise intensity levels” that can’t be memorised.
**After you lose your stubborn body fat you can quit the gym and maintain this level of conditioning for at least 9 months without cardio machines.

Some other highlights of the book

- How to Overcome Stubborn Body Fat issues…why Dieting Alone rarely ever gets the job done when it comes to losing stubborn body fat.
- How even a TINY bit of insulin in your system during exercise Drastically Reduces the Effectiveness of your fat loss workout.
- How focusing on a Weekly Calorie Deficit not Daily Calories, allows you to lose weight while mixing in Higher Calorie Meals on a regular basis.
- How to Diet in a way that Maximizes Fat Loss, with little chance of metabolism slow down.
- Three Complete 8-Week Workout Cycles – taking you from where you are now ALL THE WAY to your ideal body fat percentage.

Today I’ve been lucky enough to sit down and talk with one of Australia’s most inspiring fitness models – Miss Emily Skye

Emily’s an internatonal Australian fashion, beauty, fitness and swimsuit model.
With so many projects on the go at once, I aim to find out how Emily fits it all in aswell as being able to maintain her outstanding physique year round.
————-

Clint: So Emily, how did you get started with modeling, and fitness?

Emily Skye: I started doing a few modelling jobs when I was about 12 but got into it more when I left school. I was actually quite shy and had no self confidence when I was younger and it was a way to help gain some confidence.
I branched into fitness modelling a year or so ago. I entered a cover girl competition for the Australian Oxygen Magazine and made it into the top 5.

A lot of people said I couldn’t do it and I proved them wrong. I live & breath health and fitness so being a fitness model suits me perfectly.

I then made it my goal to get on the cover which I am aiming to do this year!
I decided to compete in my first Figure and Fit Body competition in September 2011. I won both comps and was very proud of myself and the dedication I had made with my training and diet. A lot of people said I couldn’t do it and I proved them wrong. I live & breath health and fitness so being a fitness model suits me perfectly.

Clint: What is the number one thing that keeps ‘Emily Skye’ motivated?

Emily Skye: Knowing exactly what I want! I keep my goal in focus at all times. I have never felt better physically and mentally and that is a big reason why I don’t have much trouble staying motivated.

Clint: What is your training routine like, and what does it involve?

Emily Skye: I always mix it up & do different exercises so my body doesn’t get used to them – It goes something like this:

Day 1:

Legs (heavy) – Squats, lunges, leg extension, leg press, leg curls.

Day 2:

Shoulders using dumbbells & the cable machine.

Day 3:

Bis & Tris using dumbbells & cables.

Day 4:

Legs (light) – Usually 10 sets of 20 lunges with a bar on my shoulders & squats against the wall with a ball to support my lower back.

Day 5:

Back – Dead lifts, bent over rows, heaves, lat pull downs, seated row cable machine.

Day 6:

Circuit/sprints/tabata/intervals

Day 7:

REST!

I do abs every 3 days & calves twice a week.

Clint: What are some of the other writers, artists, models and fitness leaders that have inspired you?

Emily Skye: I have so many! Anyone who is working hard on their goal or has accomplished or overcome something inspires me. My biggest inspirations are the people around me who constantly inspire me without even realising it.
Some of my favorite fitness inspirations are: Erin Stern, Jamie Eason, Lindy Olsen, Amber Elizabeth, Zoe Daly, Kristen Mathers and Justine Switalla – just to name a few!

Clint: I debunk a lot of gimmicks and scams on this site. Is there anything fitness related that you’ve fallen victim to yourself and wasted your money on in the past?

Emily Skye: Yes. haven’t we all! A few years ago I was so obsessed with getting toned and lean that I purchased weight loss accelerator tablets. They made me sick! I don’t recommend taking diet pills, there are no quick fixes or magic pills. I have achieved my fitness goals by doing it the healthy way – Consistency is the key.

I don’t recommend taking diet pills, there are no quick fixes or magic pills.

Clint: Your own physical feature that you are most proud of?

Emily Skye: Probably my back or shoulders.

Clint: Are there any KEY diet or training tips that you adhere to?

Emily Skye: I always mix up my training to shock my body!
I do a mixture of weights, circuits, sprints and intervals. I listen to my body and if I’m too tired to train I won’t. I push my body to it’s limits – not passed them.

Emily winning both titles at the Figure and Fit Body Competition in September 2011.

I eat to fuel not to fill and eat foods that have a high nutritional value – lean meats, complex carbs, lots of greens & limit my fruits to mainly berries. I always have healthy snacks handy such as almonds so I won’t snack on unhealthy food. I eat everything in moderation – too much of anything isn’t good for you.
If I want a chocolate I’ll have it, but will train extra hard next training session to make up for it. If I have a bad day and eat foods I shouldn’t then the next day I will be extra healthy.

If I want a chocolate I’ll have it, but will train extra hard next training session to make up for it.

Clint: What’s a day-in-the-life for Emily like? Give us a run-down of how you eat, train and move on a regular day.

Emily Skye: I run my own talent agency & I’m also a photographer as well as a model so I’m always busy. Every day is different so I don’t have much of a routine.
I get up in the morning and have a big glass of water, do a mini training session at home just to get the blood moving & it helps prepare for the day. I usually eat oats for breakfast (I like to have most of my carbs in the first half of the day).
I pack food & lots of water when I’m not at home so I have no excuse to not eat healthy throughout the day. I finish the day with a good gym session. If I’m stuck at home doing work on the computer, I’ll get up every hour or so and stretch, then I do a quick exercise, usually air squats/lunges, ab crunches or push ups. That way you can do them anywhere! Every bit of movement you do throughout the day adds up!

Clint: What supplements do you use if any?

Emily Skye: L-Glutamine a few times a day & L-Carnitine before training or in the morning on the days I don’t train. At the moment I’m not having any protein shakes but before my competition I was having WPI shakes 3 times a day.

Clint: Favourite quote?

Emily Skye: It’s my own quote:

Don’t ever let someone tell you that you can’t do something. If you’ve got a dream, you’ve gotta go for it, believe in yourself and know that you can and will do it! When people tell you that you can’t do something it’s usually because they couldn’t do it themselves. If you really want something, you’ve gotta do everything possible to get it! Dream, believe, commit, achieve!

Clint: What’s next on the horizon for Emily Skye?

Emily Skye: I have a lot of plans within the health and fitness industry.
My goals at the moment are to be on the cover of the Australian Oxygen Magazine & compete overseas. I’d love to represent a fitness brand or supplement company & travel around the world promoting them.
I also love writing & helping to inspire people to make positive changes in their life.
I’m working on a few very exciting things at the moment which are a secret for now ;).

Clint: Thanks for your time Emily, is there anything you’d like to add?

Emily Skye: Thank you Clint for featuring me on your site!

——————-

A guilt-free hot chocolate mug pudding recipe?

IMPOSSIBLE I hear you say.

This bad-boy came about from a VERY dangerous recipe that my wife picked up whilst at a bridal shower.
It was basically the recipe for a 3 minute chocolate cake.
No matter where you were – at any place, at any time that had BASIC cooking ingredients, you were 3 minutes away from chocolate indulgence.

Making a hot chocolate mug pudding healthy

Unlike most recipes – If you strip away the naughtiness from it, the end result will be dull, tasteless and pointless.
This is where, with a few tweaks, the chocolate mug pudding really shines.

Thankfully, the ingredients are so simple and easy to substitute with healthier options, that the end results are WAY better than anticipated.

The ingredients are your 'basic' house-hold items but with a scoop of protein powder. (note: the coffee is sh*t - don't use the pictured brand if you can help it).

Trial and error

I’ve been through so MANY variations of this beloved recipe before unleashing it on the internet today.

I reckon I’ve ‘NAILED IT’ to the point where it’s ‘almost’ as good as the original (naughty) variant.

To add to the awesome™, this recipe only uses ONE measuring device! – and it’s a tablespoon!
It just doesn’t get any easier.
(Just make sure you add the dry/wet ingredients in the correct order)

Ingredients for guilt-free hot chocolate mug pudding

Dry ingredients

3 tbs Oats
1/2 Scoop chocolate protein powder (I’ve used whey)
1 tbs Sweetener (I’ve used Stevia here and if you like it sweeter, add more)
2 tbs Cooking Cocoa (The ‘richer’ the better here)
Pinch of instant coffee (Intensifies the chocolate flavour)
Pinch of salt (Intensifies all flavours)

Wet ingredients

1 Free-range egg
2 tbs olive oil
3 tbs Milk (I’ve used lite milk, but any will do)
Splash of vanilla extract or essence

The method for guilt-free hot chocolate mug pudding

1. Grab a decent sized mug that will fit all of the ingredients (jumbo sized).
2. Add all of the dry ingredients FIRST and stir to combine.
3. Follow this with the wet ingredients and stir to combine.
4. Place in a Microwave oven for 1.5 – 2 minutes on HIGH depending on how moist you like it (and how strong your oven is).
5. Serve immediately.

All of the dry ingredients should be stirred prior to adding the wet ones. Note: The mug pictured is jumbo, but I've since made the recipe in a standard sized coffee mug with the exact same results.

The end results is basically 'a cake in a cup'. If it's slightly under-cooked, it'll be extra moist with added awesome™

Notes

1. This goes GREAT with full-fat ice-cream. That’s right – full fat. None of this fat-free rubbish that is full of sugar anyway (If you’re gonna eat ice-cream, at least do it properly).
2. Make sure you DON’T overcook the pudding. Maybe try 1.5mins on high first then see if it needs longer.
3. Under any circumstance do NOT remove the oil – this is what makes it soft and ‘pudding-like’ (Will be a waste of time without it).

Enjoy your guilt-free hot chocolate mug pudding

If you skipped the ice-cream part, then good for you – it really is guilt free.
I reach for one of these bad boys whenever I’m craving something sweet.

Not only will it keep you full for hours, but it’ll give you a decent protein hit aswell. Enjoy!

Editor’s note: Have you tried the recipe or do you think you will? Comment below
